What’s the difference between solid wood and engineered wood?
April 18, 2022Ottawa laminate flooring is rapidly becoming a prime choice for flooring options. It is attractive, reasonably priced, and is easy to install. It is manufactured by topping a particleboard wood base with a decorative layer that is then covered with a transparent coating to provide good wear and tear over time.
Why is Ottawa laminate flooring a good choice?
Installation.
An entire room of laminate flooring can be completed in a day. With the elimination of grout and mortar, clean-up is simple. It is easy to cut the laminate planks to size using a light-duty circular saw or even just a hand saw. Install the laminate tightly, and you have a smooth finish you will be proud of.
Removal.
When it is time for remodelling, the laminate comes up very quickly. Since it is not attached to the subfloor, there is no scraping mortar or adhesive. The only drawback is that you need to remove the baseboards and shoe moulding. Then the uninstall is as simple as picking up the pieces of laminate.
Durability.
Laminate is a very stable flooring. It has a transparent top layer to resist wear, and the overall product is strong and resists scratching. Compare that with hardwood that can warp, ceramic tile that can crack, or engineered wood that can wear down to the plywood base.
Maintenance.
If installed with tight seams, debris will not accumulate. Small puddles of water should be wiped up immediately. The floors can be cleaned with a damp cloth or spray mop. Heavy wet mopping should be avoided because the water can infiltrate the seams of even the smallest dimension.
Laminate over the years.
Laminate manufacturers have developed improved products over the past few years. They are now able to simulate better different wood types and grains like teak or mahogany. It can even mimic antiqued or hand-scraped looks. It comes in planks of 3 ½ inches up to 7 ¾ inches. The wood grain is embossed at a deeper level, so the boards appear more realistic.
The only caveat is that laminate should not be used in areas of high moisture content like kitchens or baths. They can be installed in those areas with proper vapour barriers and/or tight seams and finished edges.
