How to Maintain Your New Floors Through Ottawa’s Harsh Winters
May 27, 2026Proper preparation is the foundation of a successful flooring installation. Skipping steps can lead to delays, additional costs, and even flooring performance issues down the road. Use this comprehensive checklist to ensure your Ottawa home is ready for new floors.
2–4 Weeks Before Installation
Confirm the Details
- Verify your installation date and arrival time with your flooring contractor
- Confirm all materials have been ordered and delivery is scheduled
- Review the project scope: which rooms, transitions, trim, and removal are included
- Discuss any access requirements (parking for the crew, elevator booking for condos)
Plan the Logistics
- Arrange temporary storage for furniture being moved out of installation areas
- Plan where family members and pets will stay during installation (dust and noise are unavoidable)
- If you have hardwood refinishing, plan to vacate the home for 24–48 hours after the final coat
- Notify condo management if applicable—most buildings require advance notice and elevator reservations
1 Week Before Installation
After the assessment, you will select your flooring material. Whether you are considering hardwood flooring, engineered hardwood, vinyl flooring, laminate flooring, Ottawa tiles, or carpet flooring, visit our flooring showroom on Colonnade Road to see and feel options in person. Colour, texture, and quality are difficult to judge from small samples online. If you are unsure which hardwood species suits your home, our guide on choosing hardwood can help you compare options before your visit.
Phase 2: Pre-Installation Preparation
Room Preparation
- Remove all furniture from installation areas, or confirm your installer will handle this
- Take down curtains, blinds, and wall decorations in the work zone
- Remove items from closets in rooms being floored (installers need access to closet floors)
- Disconnect and move electronics (TVs, speakers, computer equipment)
- Note and photograph any existing wall or baseboard damage for reference
Subfloor Access
- If existing carpet is being removed, ensure it’s been pulled up (or confirm removal is in scope)
- Clear pathways from the main entrance to all installation areas
- Ensure adequate lighting in work areas
Material Acclimatization
Your flooring materials should be delivered to your home 48–72 hours before installation. This allows the materials to adjust to your home’s temperature and humidity conditions, reducing the risk of post-installation movement.
- Store materials flat in the room where they’ll be installed
- Maintain normal heating/cooling during acclimatization (don’t turn off your HVAC)
- Keep materials in their packaging until installation day
- Ensure the room temperature is between 18–24°C and humidity is 35–50%
Installation Day Preparation
- Secure pets in a room away from the work area—doors will be open and tools present hazards
- Ensure clear parking near your entrance for the crew’s vehicle
- Have your HVAC running at normal settings
- Plan for noise—saws and nail guns are loud (inform neighbours if in a townhome or condo)
- Make a bathroom accessible to the installation crew
- Be available (or designate someone) for questions during installation
Ottawa-Specific Considerations
Winter Installations
- Keep your home heated to at least 18°C—cold temperatures affect adhesives and material flexibility
- Allow extra time for material delivery vehicles in snowy conditions
- Protect new floors from tracked-in salt and snow during the installation period
- Run a humidifier to maintain 35%+ humidity, as winter air can be extremely dry
Summer Installations
- Air conditioning helps control humidity during installations
- Avoid scheduling installation during extreme heat waves if your home lacks air conditioning
- Keep windows closed during installation to prevent humidity fluctuations
